Last Saturday, we visited Glendarragh Lavender Farm in Appleton, Maine. They were almost ready to harvest the lavender and opened their farm–lavender fields and gift shop–to visitors. What a beautiful place!
I’ve always wanted to see fields of lavender but didn’t know about Glendarragh until recently. They grow a dozen varieties of English and French (lavandin) lavender at their farm, in a range of colors from deep purple to pale pink, white, and of course, lavender. You can read more about them and see some harvest photos on their Facebook page.
I had fun taking some pictures (it’s much prettier in person). As we strolled among the blossoming hedges, the scent of lavender followed us on the breeze. It was a warmer floral than the sometimes piney scent of the essential oil, somehow sweeter. My kids enjoyed the lemon lavender ice cream, made with the farm’s lavender buds.
Of course I had to come home and make some Lavender Lemonade lip balms. It’s a specialty flavor, a purple-hued lemon-flavored balm with a hint of lavender.
